What is an Alternative Medicine Practice-Research Network
(AMPBRN)?
A AMPRBRN pursues research in the primary care practice to
evaluate safety, efficacy, and outcome of nontraditional healing modalities not widely
taught at US medical schools. Through collection of the clinician's own patient-care
experience in multicenter sites a representative knowledge database can be created from
which treatment recommendations can be derived.
Who are the participants in an AMPBRN?
The network was founded by Bernd Wollschlaeger, M.D., a board
certified family physician in private practice and Clinical Assistant Professor of
Medicine and Family Medicine at the University of Miami. The Advisory Board currently
includes Paul Cooley, licensed Massage Therapist, Member of the Florida State Massage
Therapy Association. The Board is currently inviting interested professionals to
participate in this challenging endeavor.
What is our purpose?
 | Support for community-based healthcare professionals physicians
conducting primary care research, including methodological, technical
and financial assistance |
 | Serve as a network of credentialed healthcare professionals in the
community interested in participating in multi-site studies |
 | Develop research expertise among community-based South Florida
physicians to facilitate practice-based research |
 | Affiliate with academic centers to provide resources for
community-based research in South Florida. |
 | Provide a community-based laboratory for academic studies |
Why is there a need for an AMPBRM?
 | Between 35-40% of all Americans use at least one alternative
treatment modality and the visits to alternative practitioners increased from 427 million
in 1990 to 629 million in 1997,and 15 million US adults take prescription medications
concurrently with herbal remedies and/or high-dose vitamin preparations. |
 | We believe that community-based research in the field of
alternative medicine will protect the public safety and health and promote well-being. |
 | Multiple site studies provide large numbers of ambulatory
patients, and gives us the opportunities to create a knowledge database about the outcome
of non-traditional healing modalities. |
 | Primary care research of alternative and complementary treatment
modalities utilizing single or multiple practice sites will provide answers and
information to topics including: |
 | the impact of alternative health care delivery on patient
care |
 | documentation of the diverse health maintenance practices of
physicians and other healthcare professionals. |
 | the efficacy, effects and interactions of commonly prescribed
medications with herbal, nutritional and dietary supplements. |
 | the efficacy of alternative therapeutic interventions |
 | the spectrum of medical decision making in the primary care
setting integrating non-traditional healing approaches. |
 | the effects of application of alternative treatments on the
continuity of care and patient health. |
How can I become a AMPBRN Member?
AMPBRN membership is open to all primary care physicians and
other healthcare professionals interested in primary care research. Membership provides
specific benefits. There is no cost to join AMPBRN.
AMPBRN has been designed to provide individualized research
assistance to its members, and the opportunity for multi-practice studies. Members are
requested to respond periodically to membership surveys about individual research needs
and the demography of their practices.
Members and others may propose studies to be considered by the
network. Projects will be reviewed by the AMPBRN Research Committee, which acts as the
AMPBRN Steering Committee. Selected projects will be presented to the members-at-large for
their participation. Participation in a multi-practice site study would entail specific
responsibilities for that study.
What kind of benefits do you offer?
 | Opportunity to propose or participate in multi-practice studies |
 | Help in developing individual or group projects |
 | Opportunity for collaboration with community-based or academic
researchers |
 | Methodological assistance in study design or statistical analysis |
 | Advice on using the computer as a research tool |
 | Literature searching using Medline and related searches |
 | Access to resources to support students or other research
assistants |
 | Technical support for medical artwork or slides |
 | Review of research proposals and papers |
 | Assistance in obtaining grant funding |
