Chestnut – A Treatment for Varicose Veins?

Product:

Chestnut ( Castanea Sativa) extract is derived from the leaves of a tree found mostly in maritime climates.The flowers of the tree ripen in October revealing a brown-skinned sweet chestnut fruit.The leaves are collected and air-dried for medicinal use.

Properties:

The leave extract contains several compounds of tannins and flavonoids (rutin, quercitrin,and myricitin)

Experimental Data suggest:

  • Decrease of the permeability ("leakage") of vein capillaries.
  • Inhibition of lysosomal enzymes which can increase leakage of vein capillaries.
  • Balance of filtration and absorption of water.

Clinical Data suggest indication for:

  • Six double blind randomized studies involving 434 patients showed significant reduction in lower leg edema.
  • Increase blood flow in lower leg veins comparable to compression stockings.

Contraindication:

  • Hypersensitivity to chestnut preparations.

Side Effects:

  • Gastric irritation, nausea, and rapid heartbeat have occurred rarely.

Precautions:

  • Do not recommend treatment if pregnant, nursing, or diagnosed with liver or kidney disease.

Interactions with other medications:

  • None reported..

Daily Dosage and Administration:

  • Standard extracts contain 16% (300mg) of chestnut seed concentrate.
  • Adults should take 1 Cap (300mg) twice daily with water

Duration of Application:

  • Daily use should be restricted to 4-6 weeks.
  • No safety data available for extended chestnut extract use.

Overdose:

  • Not known.

Special Warnings:

  • Avoid use in pregnant and nursing women.
  • Avoid use if you suffer from liver or kidney disease.
