Black Cohosh A Solution
for Menopausal Ailments?
Based on German Commission E monograph and
American Botanical Council information material and summarized by Bernd Wollschlaeger,

treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Product:
Black Cohosh or is a herbal remedy derived from a plant Cimicifuga Racemosa cultivated
in Canada, US and Europe.The root section of the plant is being used to extract the active
compounds.Other names used: Black Snake Root, Rattleroot, Rattleweed, Squaw Root,
Richweed.
Properties:
- The active components are:
- Triterpene glycoside
- Phenylpropane derivatives
- It contains a phytoestrogen (plant derived estrogen) formononetin. This is a different
phytoestrogen than that found in soy products. flaxseeds or other food plants.
- Phytoestrogen Compounds of the rootstocks couple to estrogen receptors and cause an
estrogen-like effect.
Clinical Data suggest indication for:
- Menopausal complaints (Hot flashes etc.)
- Premenstrual Syndrome
- Painful irregular menstrual bleeding
Contraindication:
- Hypersensitivity to black cohosh preparations .
Side Effects:
- High dosages (>5gr.) can cause headache, dizziness, vomiting, and lowered blood
pressure.
- Reported cases of gastric discomfort
Precautions:
- Do not recommend treatment during pregnancy.
- Estrogen-dependent tumors (i.e., breast cancer, etc.)
Interactions with other medications:
- Avoid use with other estrogen-like substances (Ginseng)
- Avoid use with hormone-replacement therapy
Daily Dosage and Administration:
- Standardized dried extract in a recommended daily dosage of 8-40mg.
- For dried root the dosage is 900-2000mg..
Duration of Application:
- Long-term safety in using this drug has not been established.
- Restrict usage to several days as indicated.
- Do not recommend use without contacting physician experienced in botanical medicine.
Overdose:
- Do not exceed 5 gram daily.
- Toxic signs include vomiting, headache and dizziness.
